The Greene County supervisors at their Feb. 2 meeting approved providing $5,000 in Dreyfus funds toward a memorial honoring the schoolboy soldiers of Rippey who fought in the Civil War. The payment will be made over two years.
Chuck Offenburger and committee members Dave Burkett, Dena Boyd, and Greene County High School students Aden Bardole, Ava Hinote and Mia Murphy presented the request. The committee also seeks to place the memorial either in the courthouse or on the courthouse grounds. The board did not approve that request, but wants to have further discussion with the committee about putting a memorial on county property.
(Louis Dreyfus funds are not derived from property tax, but from a payment in lieu of taxes initiated when the Louis Dreyfus ethanol plant at Grand Junction opened.)
Work has been underway on the HVAC system at the courthouse for two months and the first change order has been informally approved. The plans for the project left two wooden doors in the attic. The change order is to replace them with steel fireproof doors at an approximate cost of $6,252. Graphite Construction, contractor on the project, will provide the board with an official change order at a later date.
The board approved a pair of resolutions regarding the sale of $9,795,000 general obligation urban renewal capital loan notes to be used for secondary roads projects. Paying agent for the bonds is UMB Bank NA of West Des Moines. The bonds will be paid with tax increment financing derived from the Mid-American wind turbines north and east of Grand Junction. Supervisor Dan Benitz announced he will not run for a second term on the board. His term expires Dec. 31, 2026.
